Australian Cobberdogs have become the genetically healthiest dogs on the planet, but as breeders we can only do so much. Owners need to do their part and provide their dogs with optimum lifestyle choices if they want to see their dogs live to a healthy and active old age.
Diet is everything, your Cobberdog puppy starts life with a wealth of genetic health investment, but his future is in your hands. You have heard the term you are what you eat! well it is true for our dogs. We live in a busy world and food production and marketing has catered for our busy lifestyle, how quick and easy it is to open a can or packet, the label says it has all sorts of vitamins and minerals, but did you know these vitamins and minerals are test tube copies, our bodies and the same for our dogs simply cannot metabolise synthetic additives. Sure we all enjoy a pizza or cream cake but would you feed that to your children every day? and expect then to grow up to be healthy adults? How do we feel after several days eating nothing but take away foods, chips and soft drink? Hmm not so good. instinctively we start to crave for fresh natural foods. Dogs are no different!
Why are our beloved dogs getting human deceases like cancer, Diabetes, thyroid disorders the list goes on and on, why are our dogs old and suffering when they are only 10 or 11 years of age?
Watch this video by prominent veterinarian Dr Karen Becker. Perhaps you may get a more informative outlook on how important it is to give your dog more than a diet of only dry kibble.

Billions of dollars are spent every year with advertising campaigns convincing us that science knows more than nature! they say if you love your dog feed it this or that brand of kibble.
Take some time and make use of what the internet has to offer, learn what meatmeal really is! or how dangerous corn can be to the canine species!
In many countries getting raw meat and poultry is very expensive, but look at it this way, add up the cost of 6 or more years of vet bills, and what price do we put on our heartache watching our beloved family member suffer a third or more of its life with preventable illnesses. Even 1/2 a healthy diet is worth the effort, the more natural foods your dog can eat the better equipped he is to overcome the adverse affects of processed foods.

It's very easy to add fresh foods to your dog's diet, even if you find it difficult to find raw fresh meat or poultry. Simple things like these will help
EGGS either raw, boiled, scrambled, whisked through lactose-free milk, or a piece cut off your own omelette
LACTOSE-FREE MILK
CHEESE all kinds of cheese are good (I like cheese as healthy training treats)
YOGURT SUPER important because our dogs no longer have access to natural gut bacteria VITAL for healthy efficient digestion. It is very easy to make your own or use only Greek style non flavored, non sweetened - just a tablespoon a couple of times a week. Also should be offered when your dog is on a course of antibiotics.
Recipe: 2 liters whole cream milk heat in pan until almost boiling [do NOT boil] let cool [no fridge]
add 2 table spoons of natural unsweetened non flavored ready eat yogurt, if possible add contents of 6 lactobaciliouse captels and stir in well cover with cloth to keep dark and let stand for 3-4 days in room temperature, when it is solid scoop into containers and refrigerate perfect for you and your dog. your children might like some fresh fruit added!
BONES any family meals that have bones, cut away the raw bones for your dog and cook the rest for your family every bit helps.
WHOLEMEAL BREAD OR TOAST (they love it spread with peanut butter, vegemite/marmite or butter)
RAW VEGETABLE PIECES Once or twice a week, pop some in the blender, with a little chicken or beef stock added. When you are preparing your own meal, save cut offs from your vegetables, and add some leafy greens or other green vegetable such as broccoli or green beans, and some Lightly cooked legumes and seeds.Add to this raw meat pieces. liver, heart, kidney would be particularly good to give flavor to this meal.
This meal mimics the nutritious pre-digested stomach contents of caught prey in the wild and is the first meal sought after the kill, following the rich organ meat of kidneys, brains and liver.

Supplement with a few drops of cold pressed Flax seed and or coconut oil ( A natural anti-inflammatory, and chock full of valuable anti-oxidants and amino acids ) Bran oil is also good. One Tablespoon for a large adult dog, or a teaspoonful for a little dog or puppy, given two or three times a week provide essential Omegas and boost the immune system. It isn't necessary to give it every day to a healthy dog do not forget some fish 1 or 3 times a week!
Apple Cider vinegar 1 teaspoon to 2 liters of drinking water is simply amazing to our health
Raw fish or canned
Broth if you can get fish, poultry and meat waste boil it into a broth [strain fish to remove any cooked bone] freeze this broth for use with whole meal bred and veggie and fruit mix.
Once you start to realise how important whole natural foods are for your dogs you will be amazed how inventive you can be and how many friends and neighbors will help by keeping their meat waste to give to you.

YOUNG PUPPIES CAN HAVE AS MUCH AS HE/SHE WANTS TO EAT AT EACH MEAL TIME until 12 to 14 weeks of age then have weight assessed and feed accordingly. Fat over weight puppies and young dogs are very prone to skeletal growth problems They are not generally greedy dogs and will only eat as much as they need.

Did you know a dogs' DNA is 98% wolf! even the Chihouhou! they are omnivores, meaning their diet is only part meat and fat, they also need semi digested [lightly cooked is the alternative] vegetation, seeds, legumes and fruits, they also benefit from small quantities of dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, eggs and milk fresh from the cow or goat or alternatively lactose free milk. In the wild, dogs and wolves ate the stomach contents of their herbaceous eating prey, as well as the meat, fat and organs. and their digestive systems are well equipped to manage RAW bones which provide a perfect blend of calcium and minerals in the perfect synergy. The best type of bones are from young animals such as veal or lamb, Pork, because soft mouthed dog will crunch them up and eat them completely, leaving nothing behind. Large high density bones like shin bones are too hard and cause wear and tear on the dogs' teeth as they gnaw away on them trying to get the valuable marrow out of the center, they are not advisable for a small or soft mouthed dog like a Cobberdog they are better left to the Mastiff type breeds with their powerful jaws.
COOKED BONES SHOULD NEVER EVER BE FED TO A DOG. NEVER.
WHY? Because dogs have powerful hydrochloride acid stomach juices which dissolve RAW bones. Cooking changes the molecular structure of bones and the dog is not able to digest them. Cooking makes them brittle and serious damage (even fatal) can be done to your dog's insides if you feed cooked bones of any kind.
SYNTHETIC VITAMIN/MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS ARE NOT THE BEST CHOICE.
